SMART PERGOLAS PROTECT BETTER FROM SUN & RAIN
We just finished building this smart pergola structure. It features pivoting louvers that can be opened or closed, either to let the sun in or to protect from it. In the closed position, the louvers also protect from the rain. This is an elegant solution to extend the time you can spend outdoors with your family and guests. Note the presence of super-gutters on each side of the structure: they help channeling rainwater coming down the roof to the side and into the ground, rather than letting it flow over the louvers. Not only is it better for the louver mechanism, but it also avoid water, dirt, dust and leaves staying on top of the louvers with the risk of mildew growth and difficult clean-ups. ADDING A FIXED ROOF STRUCTURE TO PROTECT A PATIO
This home is located on Vina Del Mar Island, at the southern tip of St Petersburg, FL. As you can see in the first photo, the house has a nice courtyard with a pool, and the patio space back of the pool deck and nearest the wall has been transformed into a dining area by the owners. The problem was the exposure to the sun and to the wind. The choice of a fixed roof structure was the best option to cover the dining area and protect it from the sun, but the structure had to be anchored very strongly to the existing masonry and carpentry to make it hurricane-proof. You can see in the second photo how we anchored it to the existing carpentry. On its under side, it is also anchored to the wall masonry, and to the deck itself with a column dug and cemented into the ground. This fixed roof structure enables the owners to entertain guests outside all year round. It is much stronger than retractable awnings.
